Custom Permissions

Problem: We have a list on one of our extranet sites where the committee members need to have all of the normal ‘Contribute’ permissions except for delete.

Solution: We created a custom permissions level called ‘Participate’ with the same permissions as Contribute minus the delete permission.

Creating Custom Permission Levels

  1. Go to: Site Actions->Site Settings->People and Groups
  2. Go to: Site Permissions
  3. If you are basing your new permission level on an existing permission level, click on that permission level at this point in order to see what permissions it has.
  4. Select: Settings->Permission Levels
  5. Select: Add a Permission Level
  6. Give it a name and description then choose individual permissions. Click Create when done.
  7. Your permission level now shows up in the list.

Changing Permission Level for a Group

  1. Go to: Site Actions->Site Settings->People and Groups
  2. Go to: <group name> on left navigation.
  3. Select: Settings->Group Settings
  4. Under “Name and About Me Description” edit the About Me text to reflect the new permission level.
  5. Under “Give Group Permission to this Site” check the new permission level and uncheck the old permission level. Click OK when done.
